We offer the following sedation options:

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

You can request the addition of nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” to almost any dental appointment, including cleanings! A soft nose piece delivers the gas, which begins to provide relaxing effects within the first few minutes. With nitrous oxide, you are still completely conscious, just relaxed. Once your treatment concludes, we turn off the nitrous gas, allowing the relaxing sedative to gradually wear off. At this point, you will fully recover and have the ability to drive yourself to and from the appointment.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a safe and effective option for most dental treatments. If you feel like you may need it, please let us know. The process is straightforward and easy.

During the procedure, you will receive the gas through a soft nosepiece. After a few minutes, you will begin to feel relaxed, yet still conscious and comfortable. The nitrous oxide will quickly wear off its effects once the treatment is complete. You will not feel drowsy, and it will be safe for you to drive home.

Oral Conscious Sedation

If you’re feeling anxious or nervous about dental treatment, you can discuss the option of oral conscious sedation with your dentist. Those who fear needles and are 11 years or older find this type of sedation particularly beneficial.

To take oral sedation, you’ll simply swallow a pill and feel drowsy afterwards. You’ll be awake during the procedure but will feel as though you’re sleeping. Oral sedation can linger for several hours, facilitating the completion of longer treatments in a single visit.

Generally, healthy patients are suitable candidates for oral sedation. However, after the oral sedative, a local anaesthetic may still be necessary.

Oral sedation can sometimes cause temporary memory loss after the procedure. Before your appointment, you’ll need to follow specific instructions and make arrangements for someone to drive you home afterwards, as you’ll be unable to drive yourself.

Intravenous Sedation (Deep Sedation/Twilight Sedation)

If you suffer from severe dental phobia and experience anxiety during dental treatments, IV sedation may be the solution for you. This type of sedation entails administering medication via injection, which will induce a deep state of relaxation during your treatment.

The effects of the medication can last for several hours, so even though you will still receive local anesthesia for added comfort, we recommend that you arrange transportation prior to your appointment. Make sure to carefully follow any special precautions required before your visit.

General Anesthesia
