Why Tooth Extraction Is Necessary?

Tooth extraction is a dental procedure where a tooth is removed from its socket in the jawbone. This procedure is typically performed by a dentist or an oral surgeon. A tooth extraction may be necessary for several reasons, including:

Severe tooth decay: If a tooth is extensively decayed and cannot be restored with fillings or crowns, extraction may be necessary to prevent further damage to surrounding teeth and gums.
Advanced gum disease: Periodontal (gum) disease can cause the supporting structures of the teeth to deteriorate, leading to loose teeth that may need to be extracted.
Impacted wisdom teeth: Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, can become impacted (unable to fully emerge from the gum line) due to a lack of space in the mouth. Impacted wisdom teeth may cause pain, infection, or damage to adjacent teeth, requiring extraction.
Orthodontic treatment: In some cases, tooth extraction may be necessary as part of orthodontic treatment to create space for proper alignment of the remaining teeth.
Trauma or injury: A tooth that is severely damaged or fractured beyond repair may need to be extracted.

Tooth Extraction Procedure

If you and your dentist decide that removing your wisdom teeth or any other teeth is the best course of action, the procedure will involve using a local anesthetic to control pain. We offer conscious sedation to our patients for added comfort during some dental procedures at our Southcity Dental clinic. Conscious sedation is the administration of an oral, IV, or inhaled sedative to help patients relax during their dental procedures, such as wisdom teeth removal. The patient remains awake and able to communicate throughout the entire procedure.

The procedure to remove an erupted wisdom tooth is usually similar to any other tooth extraction. For impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth, the dentist will need to open up the gum tissue over the tooth and remove any bone that is covering the tooth. The dentist will then separate the tissue that connects the tooth to the bone and remove the tooth. In some cases, it may be necessary to cut the tooth into smaller pieces to make it easier to remove. Stitches may be used to suture the gum tissue to help prevent infection at the extraction site.
